Demand for Immediate Implementation of Journalist Protection Law, Push for Special Cells to Safeguard Rural Reporters,
New Delhi, May 14, 2026,
A journalists’ association has strongly urged the government to immediately implement the _Journalist Protection Law_ to ensure the safety and security of media personnel across the country. A delegation submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday highlighting growing threats to press freedom.
*Key Demands Raised:*
– *Immediate Implementation of Protection Law*: The letter calls for urgent enforcement of a specific law designed to protect journalists. The association said legal safeguards are needed to deter attacks and ensure strict action against perpetrators.
– *Safety of Rural Journalists*: The memorandum highlighted the heightened risk and vulnerability faced by journalists in rural and smaller towns. It asked for special security measures, noting that reporters in these areas often face threats, violence, and false cases for their ground reporting.
– *Establishment of Special Cells*: The association requested that special cells be set up in every district to address cases of attacks and harassment against journalists promptly. These cells would ensure time-bound investigation and accountability.
The letter emphasized that *freedom of expression* is vital for a healthy democracy and acknowledged the media as the “fourth pillar” of democracy. It stated that journalists cannot perform their duty fearlessly without institutional protection, which ultimately weakens democratic discourse.
Ministry officials assured the delegation that the demands would be examined seriously and that consultations with state governments would be initiated.
